The Politehnica University of Timisoara through the e-Learning Center together with the Multimedia Center have organized the fourth edition of the Digital Skills and Competences workshop on Digital Culture, Europeana and Timi\u0219oara 2021<\/a> on Friday, December 13th. The event was attended by dozens of participants and was broadcasted online, through live streaming on the Facebook platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With dozens of international speakers from the US, Europe and Romania, the workshop was addressed to all actors in the field of creative industries, people in the field of culture, artists, students, teachers in university and pre-university education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presentations of this workshop were part of the strategy of the Erasmus +\nDigiCulture project – “Improving the Digital Competences\nand Social Inclusion of Adults in Creative Industries”, to build a free online\ncourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speakers within\nthe workshop presented practical examples of use and integration of\ndigital elements, of virtual and augmented reality (AR & VR) applications\nin education, culture and promoting cultural heritage, and also in creative industries. The focus was\non Europeana collections, applications for storing cultural objects, how\nTimisoara2021 will be present in Europeana, but also methods of using these collections in\neducation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ways of\nattractively promoting\nmuseums, STEM and arts among\nyoung people, with the help of robotics, AR and VR applications have been\npresented with examples from Europe and Timisoara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The digital\nstrategy of Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture and opportunities for\ncollaboration with artists from Ireland were also presented within the workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presentation\nof the project Spotlight Heritage\nTimi\u0219oara, which uses concepts such as digital heritage, integrated in\nweb and mobile applications and the cultural involvement of communities was\nanother point of interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The digital cultural data platform of Timisoara2021, the\nvisual digital identity of the cultural programme dedicated to the European Capital of Culture, the preservation of\nindividual and collective memories, the indexing, archiving of cultural data\nand the connection with Europeana were\nalso launched on this occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event started\nwith a welcoming speech of prof. dr. Radu Vasiu, director of the\nMultimedia Center, followed by associate professor dr. Florin Dr\u0103gan – the\nRector of UPT, who spoke about the importance of investments in digitization.\nDr. Diana Andone, director of CeL\ntook the floor next and\nexplained the significance of concepts such as “creative industries”\nor “digital skills” and talked about the Erasmus + Digital Culture\nproject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Europeana Foundation was the main guest of the workshop, represented through Henning Scholz\n– Partner and Operations Manager, Europeana Foundation, who presented the\nEuropean Digital Library and its cultural impact. The same subject was also approached by Dan Matei – National\nHeritage Institute of\nEuropeana Romania, presenting the advantages and characteristics of the\nEuropean Digital Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The topic aroused much interest from the audience in the\nroom, the presentation being followed by a series of questions and discussions\nregarding the practices of using the digital library in Romania and copyright laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof. Antonella Poce, Head of the Center for Museum Studies,\nUniversit\u00e0 Roma Tre, Italy – told the audience about the Tito Rossini project\nand how soft skills were developed through the university’s collections of\npaintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assoc. Prof. Mair\u00e9ad Nic Giolla Mhich\u00edl – Head of the Ideas\nLab, National Institute of Digital Learning, Dublin City University, Ireland –\npresented the cultural impact achieved by the Digital Culture project in\nIreland, by creating MOOC’s (Massive Open Online Courses) with linguistic and\ncultural features of the Irish language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assoc. Prof. Hendrik Knoche – Department of Architecture,\nDesign and Media Technology, Aalborg University, Denmark – presented methods of\nusing AR and VR technologies in education, through architecture, museums and\ndigital heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most interesting and expected presentations of the\nworkshop was the one of\nDenise Mc Donagh – Digital Programme\nManager, Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture, who presented the digital\nstrategy for Galway – European Cultural Capital 2020, but also the Atlantec programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simona Fi\u021b, Oana\nRomocea, Alexandra For\u021bi\u0219 and Radu Ticiu spoke about a series of initiatives to\nfinance, promote and educate children and young people in STEM: the\n\u0218tiintesescu Contest, Romanian Science Festival, CoderDojo and BioCoderDojo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark Frydenberg of\nBentley University, USA presented the cultural projects implemented by Google\nand “walked” the audience through a series of international museums,\nvirtually recreated through digital technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Diana Andone\nthen took the floor to present the Erasmus + Digital Culture project and the\nonline surveys conducted by the CeL team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorina Jecza –\nInterArt Triade Foundation delighted the public with a series of art works,\nanimated with the help of augmented and virtual reality applications – the\ncultural project Himere valahe animate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof.dr.ing.\nCarmen Holotescu – Ioan Slavici University \u2013 introduced the audience to\nblockchain technology and the types of projects carried out at European level\nthrough it. She also presented various possibilities of using this technology\nin the cultural field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Diana Andone,\nDr. Mugur Mocofan, Dr. Vlad Mih\u0103escu, Dr. Silviu Vert – Politehnica University\nof Timisoara, together with Marius Cornea from the National Museum of Banat\npresented the digital applications realized within the project Spotlight\nHeritage Timisoara, a project that was implemented by the CeL and CM teams,\ntogether with the UPT students, in partnership with the National Museum of  Banat and the Timi\u0219oara European Cultural\nCapital Association 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another highlight\nof the workshop was the launch of the Timisoara2021 Digital Cultural Data\nPlatform. Being part of the programme that won the title Timi\u0219oara 2021 –\nEuropean Capital of Culture, the platform was presented by members of the\ndevelopment team: Dr. Diana Andone, Dr. Andrei Ternauciuc and Dr. Mugur Mocofan\n(Polytehnica University of Timi\u0219oara).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the\nworkshop, Chiara Zuanni – Graz University, Austria – spoke about the digital\ntransformation of museums and the new forms of curation and public engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
